from the tile end of things
there are two sites I would put on the must see list for someone
visiting the area
outside of NCECA week
One is the Adamson house, now a part of the Malibu Lagoon state Beach ,
and sits between the Mailbu Pier and the Malibu lagoon estuary.
This house is an over-the top incredible example of Malibu tile. built
in 1929-1931 for the Rindge family. Malibu potteries was located right
on the beach in Malibu in the 20s, on the Rindge property. This house ,
or estate, really, has fountains and tile installations that are
beautiful examples of the many Malibu styles , and examples of Spanish
/moorish style tile. It is really something . address is 23200 Pacific
coast Highway, Malibu. phone # is 213-456-1770
The other location , though not exactly 'on the way' from San Diego to
San Francisco is Catalina island and the tile murals there. Both
historic and contemporary tile installations. Catalina accessible by
ferry from Long Beach I believe, and also Dana point.
