Chris -
About four years ago our former artist-in-residence Jason Briggs built a
tiny soda kiln here at the Craft Center - about three cubic feet, two MR-750
burners from Mark Ward. This little kiln has worked very well, although I
couldn't say it has been used very heavily, because it is so small. It
isn't any easier to fire a three cubic foot gas soda kiln than it is to fire
a 20 cubic foot gas soda kiln.
This kiln is a simple catenary arch design with no steel frame necessary,
and with castable blocks to close up the door. Very easy to build. Get
ahold of a copy of Olson's "The Kiln Book" and design a catenary arch kiln
to the size you need. It will be a simple job, and should work great. For
the size you are talking about I would go ahead and use bricks instead of
homemade castable, especially if you plan to fire it fairly frequently. If
you want it to last more than five or six years use hardbrick.
I will be back at the Craft Center a week from Monday, and I would be happy
to shoot a few images of the little kiln and email them to you. Let me know
if you want to see them.
Best wishes -

There are some plans for a small castable kiln in Ruthanne Tudball's
book Soda-fired Ceramics.
Since it is castable,
you could make it whatever size you need.

Hi Chris, what you are looking for sounds like the one Mel said that Nils
Lou was perfecting. He suggested I write Nils and ask to purchase a copy of
the plans. He said $25 or so. To date have had no response, but had planned
to try again after they are all home from the festivities. Lori Pierce in

Chris
you can find some plans and instructions in Jack Troy's book 'Salt
glazed Ceramics"
The size can be scaled to your preference. it is a castable caternary
arch kiln.
I believe Ruth Tudball's book on Salt firing is also a source of
information on building a small scale salt kiln.
