There will be a glaze calculation course (maybe 2) this summer at Canador
College. The instructors will be Phil Yordy and Margaret Barlow for the
first week.
Margaret will do the 2nd week if there are enough students for two weeks

I will be there for one day each week.

Dates for the courses are
July 7 -11 and July 14 to 18
Fee is $220 plus material fee $37.45, residence accommodation for a week for
one person is $89.99 - these are in Canadian dollars.

The brochure won't be back from the printer until end of March but the
information should be on the web site soon. You can register over the net
or by March 15. Here is the site:

www.canadorec.on.ca

Phil Yordy is a production potter and has been my assistant for the last
two courses I gave there.

Margaret has been teaching the glaze calc course at Mohawk College for
several years now.

Both are excellent teachers and bring a wealth of experience with them. I
cannot stress enough how much I think of them both.

Residence is in houses with 5 bedrooms and two Bathrooms - a kitchen and f
ridge. Most students bring some pots and dishes and cook their own food.
Breakfast and lunch are available at the college. The setting is beautiful
- on a small lake outside NorthBay - it's about a 5 minute drive into town
and there is bus service.

You will be working in a computer lab and firing and mixing glazes in the
pottery studio.

Canador is about 200 miles north of Toronto and there is a shuttle service
from Toronto Airport to the college.

For those of you from USA this is a real bargain - a little over $200 Amr.
for the course and accommodations.

I will be away at NCECA and a holiday from the 12 to the 24th so if you
have questions you can contact Margaret or Phil by email.

I purchased Insight a couple of years ago and never could figure out how to
use it, primarily because I didn't know enough about glaze theory and the
chemicals involved.

Last fall I put out a plea asking if there was someone on ClayArt who could
help me learn what I needed to know to use Insight. Several very kind
people responded offering to help and several people responded saying they
were in the same boat I was in, would I ask whoever helps me if they will
help them too. Margaret Barlow was one of those who offered to help.

We ended up having an Insight internet course with a total of 7 students. I
can speak for all 7 of us and say Margaret is a marvelous teacher, we all
learned SO much. She knows glaze theory, she knows Insight and she knows
how to present the information in a way that is easy to follow and easy to
understand. When we had questions (which were cc'd to all 7 students so we
all could learn what the others were asking about) Margaret responded with
simplicty and humor. We loved her playfulness. Where needed she referred us
to books and then explained further so that we had a good grasp of what we
were learning. I can't praise her highly enough. The 7 of us were all very
sad when the course ended, it was just too much fun.

And now, when the glaze gurus have their glaze theory exchanges on the
list, I KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT! It is SO COOL!

The Insight program is a marvel. It does in seconds what used to take PhD
chemists all day to do. It has an awe inspiring amount of information in
its database. And in learning to use the program, you will learn all about
glazes and the chemicals involved.

If you live in the States or Canada and are one of those potters who finds
the mystery of chemicals and glaze development to be overwhelming, I highly
recommend you take this course. I'm signing up to take it again this
summer because I want to meet Ron and give Margaret a kiss on the cheek.
And I can't wait to play with all those glaze recipes now that I understand
what I'm doing.

Dear Clayartists,

As one of Margaret Barlow's seven Insight email students, I want to echo all
of Belinda's comments below. I started with virtually zero knowledge of
glaze chemistry. I am stunned at what I learned. Margaret is probably the
best teacher I have ever had.

Take the course if you possibly can.

It runs on Macs and PCs - look s the same each way - the course will be
taught on PC's but that will not be a problem.

You can find out more about Insight at the following webpage:

http://www.digitalfire.com/books/511.php

Tony Hansen, who developed Insight, is hesitant to post promotional
information on ClayArt for obvious reasons but if you have questions after
reading about the program, you can email him. He is wonderful about
responding to emails. His only problem is that he's such a brainiac, he
sometimes has trouble dumbing down his answers so the rest of us can follow
him. Don't we all wish we had such problems??

In fact, if you haven't seen it, the entire digitalfire.com website is a
wealth of information for potters. Someone could spend DAYS surfing that
site, learning all sorts of valuable tidbits and gaining vast amounts of
knowledge. I know from experience.
