The St. Ives Pottery, home and studio of Bernard Leach, is on the real estate market and in jeopardy of being lost as a historic site. There is currently a movement underfoot to preserve what might arguably be called the seat of the modern studio pottery movement.

Please support this effort by visiting the following web site and expressing your interest in maintaing and supporting this historical site.

It is always a disappointment to us potters when the physical site of the
pottery goes onto the market with, sometimes, little hope of it remaining in
pottery hands.

I was the planner responsible for one pottery starting up.
The son of the family was also a potter.
When the parents decided to retire out of pottery the property came on the
market.
The son had his own pottery elsewhere.
No potters had the money to invest in that location.
So the pottery has now gone. Equipment from it is spread throughout various
potteries in the area.
What remains are the pots created by that pottery family, and very happy
memories for all who came in contact with them.

That is what should be saved.
The physical property, IMHO, should be permitted to pass on and out of the
pottery world.
A museum can always be provided.
Many potteries already have part of the Leach bequest in the form of a Leach
Kick Wheel.
There is one here, still doing sterling service.
