Hi all,
So here we are, sulking that we aren't at NCECA, but spring is
coming to VT so all is well...
I've updated my web site in a major way. Check it out below.
Any graphics wizzes out there: HOW do you save a GIF for the web
that doesn't look jaggy? My new banner on the site is yuck. I'm
using Photshop to make the banner and saving the psd as a Gif.
I'm sure it's something to do with rasterizing or antialiasing,
or dithering...but I've tried to find what's wrong in 4
different manuals and am drawing a blank. If you're willing to
do one on one email help with me there might be a mug in it for
you!
Any help MOST appreciated.
Jennifer, arm so tired from too much trackball time, is this
do-it-myself thing getting out of hand!?

Jennifer--
My husband and I looked at the web pages with our cubes, and we don=B9t see
any jaggies.
If you=B9re talking about Thistle Hill Pottery as your banner, it looks great=
.
We printed it on a laser printer and it looks fine.
At what resolution do you have your screen set?

Jennifer,
You need to check the dpi size. Also, what quality are you saving it on?
The other problem with gifs is every time they are opened they loose
quality. So always work from your original after you know exactly what you
want to do in what steps. Feel free to send me the image and I will look
at.
Thank you.

Thanks Tony,
This nice lady May gave me the answer to my problem and the site
is all fixed. In my Pagemill software on each page there is an
option for an object to "scale to fit". This option box was
checked on the pages that had the over sized fuzzy banners. All
pages use the same banner image, so when I made sure all pages
had that "scale to fit" button UNchecked, things got back to normal.
May's web site is:

Very nice

Hi Jennifer.
I haven't seen the image but I would suspect that you
tried to enlarge the image.
If you open an image in any format and then try to
resize to larger dimensions your image will distort.
The procedure is to open an image (in photoshop) and
then click on Actual Pixals. This will show you the
actual size of your image. In most cases it's a lot
larger than you would want. Then go to resize and
adjust down, never up.
If you already follow this procedure than please
ignore above. ;)

It's all fixed: no more jaggies. I got some great advice from a
Clayarter and fixed my problem about 4 hours after I first
reported it. Talk about instant gratification!

Hey, Jennifer,
I don't have a DSL hookup on my computer. When I looked at your site, I
found the photos to take a fairly long time to load using the fastest modum
available. Did you use PhotoShop's "Save for the Web" option when saving
your jpgs and gifs? Its under File. Set it for the lowest quality, which
is what the internet uses anyway, and it will automatically compress your
photos so they load in mere seconds.
I saw your dinnerware sets and they're lovely. Didn't look at the other
pages tho cause it took so long to load 'em. Impatient people like me
shouldn't have dinosaur computers.

Jennifer, I have learned that the standard for WEB presentation for
pictures is 800pixels wide and 600 pixels high with resolution at 72.
This will give a full screen image, and the low resolution will speed
the loading of JPG files. I have found that sometimes you can't get a
full 800x600 with the resolution set so low so there is compromise
needed. If a smaller image is ok, the 72 resolution is good. And it is
good for showing on screen. YOu don't really need more than that for
reasonable calrity and detail. Can't use that for printing on paper
however. But we are talking WEB here. In Photoshop goi to the menu bar
across the top of the page and select IMAGE. The controls for these
parameters are there. they are easy to follow.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

Hey Jennifer,
How is it that you can can post a response to my email before my email even
gets posted on the list??? Not only that, you had the time to re-work your
website and post a response before my response got posted. I scratch my
head in bewilderment.
Anyway, YES! Your photos load SOOO much faster. I just surfed your entire
site. Smart to have 3 basic glaze combinations. Variety yet simplicity.
You have much to be proud of.
