I have been mulling over the black plastic bats and the problem of oval
pots. Would the complainant try something for me? After you have made the
ball of clay you are going to throw on the bat, PAT it once on a piece of
turkish toweling. It is JUST possible that the dampness of your clay allows
it to slip once it has hit the bat.
And: While I find those bats nice to throw on, I use CI bats which have
ridges on the bottom. I find them immensely handy when I need to tilt pots
on the bats, as when pouring or marbling slip.

I guess I wasn't that clear in my description of my problem with the
plasti bats. My pots are not oval. I have no trouble making a pot on these
bats. But the centered mound is oval at the base. You can't really center
the whole mound of clay. My students find this frustrating. I am going to
try hardyboard. Thanks to all for so many interesting suggestions.
