Today an unusual spring day in San Diego, with brisk fresh spring winds
off the ocean, turbid choppy seas and high waves, tall cumulus clouds,
light sweaters a must, green and flowers from the Saturday downpour.
Everything about the weather today spells fecundity, fertile
turbulence, awakening. Spring change in the air, sailing in with a
purpose not seen every year, yet fitting for the end of this past week.
Goodness, you lovely potters descended on the city, turning Hotel Circle
into a beehive.
I enjoyed meeting so many CLAYARTERS who had been written voices to me
until now. Who would guess you could jump up and down and hug someone
like a long lost sister or brother, then realize this was the first time
you actually met!!!
Of course there were lots of brief encounters, people I had hoped to
talk with at length, hoped to reconnect, but saw for one fleeting
moment, and others I missed meeting, but that is how it is, and I
enjoyed even those brief meetings. We did a lot of greeting and talking
at the Tile Heritage Booth, and one of the nice bonuses was that I met
many friendly people from the local community, high school art
teachers , potters, students; with infectious and genuine enthusiasm
and spark.

I feel genuinely fortunate to strengthen friendships already formed as
well as plants seeds for new ones.
I know this has been mentioned, but Kelly, primalmommy, you wrote a
hit!!!! I hope you got a taste of just how hilarious the reading of
your peanut butter post was . What comedic timing so many CLAYARTERS
possess!!!
The first night CLAYART party was a hit and a real celebration.

A deluge on Saturday didn't prevent a hardy group from trekking up
north to the studio in Encinitas and we hunkered around the heater and
there was plenty of crackin', in the Irish sense, the conversation was
fast and happy as the rains came down, tea was poured , munchies
munched, and the studio cat had plenty of laps to choose from

Saturday night , to my surprise, I discovered that Jim Skutt and Co had
rented a beach house half mile from the studio. They had been bussing
people all day ,up from the Town and Country, but by that evening the
pace had slowed , yet there were bountiful huge bowls of shrimp and
seafood and fruit and beverages and a fire and deep soft couches and
mellow laughter and relaxation, on the bluffs over Breakers beach. I
was in heaven!

Sunday I was kidnapped and got to act like a tourist, visiting the
wonderful show at the Mingei museum and some other exhibits, and even
stopping to watch an unusually large number of gliders, sailplanes and
parasails off the bluffs in LaJolla. More heaven
Finally today Nan and Captain Mark stopped by and brightened the day,
I am so glad I got to know them , tool around the north cost a bit, and
extend the holiday one more day!.

admittedly I was rather dazed by the scope and pace of it NCECA, it
took longer to navigate in and out, and the time passed very quickly. I
realize in reflection that the joy of it was made up of many small
moments strung together like a necklace of shells and bright beads.
I didn't understand , in my daze, that I was necessarily inspired, clay
wise, until today , when facing a return to the studio, I realized I was
very energized, straining at the bit to get back at it, with a
strangely cleansed and joyful heart.
in light of other events of today, I am holding fast to it.
so thank you , all of you , individually and collectively, for that

stephani,
after reading your post i`m still amazed, how did you find the time
to show me the wonderful beaches of la jolla, just because i happened
to wish to see the ocean!
for a whole afternoon we walked bearfoot on the beach, collected shells,
visited galleries, laughed, had a wonderful lunch on a balkony overlooking
the ocean... even saw how the sun dipped into it at the end of that lovely
day ---
thank you stephani, i`ll never forget it.
adios,
marta
