I use a paperclay slip for joining, and when I mixed it with tea, as someone
suggested, instead of vinegar, as I typically do, it grew a really vile
looking mold. i threw it out and now I'm glad I did.

I used to put bleach in my clay when I made it. Then once I forgot.
Repeatedly I forgot. Never did I smell the odor that I had heard so much
about. I always use office paper to make my clay so maybe that has
someting to do with it. When I did use bleach I used the safe kind which I
think is hydrogen peroxide so that is always an option. I have never been
sick from using my clay. I am not worried.

Dear jean,
I have used paperclay since 1993. I have used linter paper for the paper
pulp, office paper ala Linda Blossom, newspaper, and most recently
cellulose from the hardware store.
I have used it in raku, terra cotta and stoneware.
It has on occasion gotten moldy...especially in really old raku clay
with newspaper. I have added some bleach to mixes that had newspaper
pulp. I believe I read somewhere that it is the ink that goes moldy.
I haven't had any problem with the celluose, or linter sources of pulp.
Also, if you mix the paper clay into slurry and dry it for storage then
it doesn't mold.
Hope this helps.

Hello Jean
I will not try to be smart. When I worked with animals I knew, I should consult from
time to time with a laboratory.
You better pay some Rands, and stay healthy, we have enough other ways to be sick!
About paperclay. I make my own If you want I shall E mail you my booklet or you can
see most of it in my site.
I keep the fresh paperclay in the fridge and for long periods I dry it. When you get
answers from people try to find out where they live.
My Canadian fellows might have a better paperclay-keeping weather.
Your fungus is not necessarily the same as mine. One thing is sure when the
claybody stinks and blacken from the inside it is no longer paperclay but garbage
clay!

Hi Jean! (Hmm, something like "hygene")--
If the moulds you see in your paperclay are questionable, I suggest handling
the paperclay with plastic gloves, or just dumping the pclay.
One of my instructors, when I last took a clay class, said that the best
clays are those with moulds. The moulds help make the clay moreso plastic,
according to him. So, I conclude that moulds may actually be helpful, at
least for non-paper clays.
Best wishes!

This post caught my attention so I thought I would share this. I slip cast
my pots. I have containers of stoneware, porcelain, and eartenware slip in
the studio. They all have really gross mold spots on the inside of the
containers and they all "smell funny". (The mold in porcelain slip is
particularely disgusting). While bacteria in throwing clay is necessary I
don't think it has as great a role in casting slip. I've not developed any
new diseases or allergies as a result of using these clays.
As throwing water develops a not particularly appealing smell after a few
days, as well, I just presume all clays experience bacteria growth (afterall
that is how they're created I do beleive) and that it is just the nature of
the beast, as it were.
Take care
