red vs black copper oxide:

My understanding is that if they don't specify, they mean black --
the black form is a whole lot more common in the pottery world
than the red form, as Lily Krakowski has already noted.

I like the red stuff, but I'm not really sure why. Everybody I know
who uses it has trouble getting it to suspend in the glaze -- it wants
to
sit on the top, almost as if the particles were coated with wax or
something.

(I either add 3 or 4 drops of dish liquid to a 200-gram test batch, or
put it in the jar mill for half an hour or so. Not sure what I'll do if
I
ever have occasion to mix a full-size batch of copper red.)

Cheers --
