glaze development: looking to the stars?

updated sun 30 mar 03

Janet Kaiser on sun 30 mar 03

I was only half listening to an astronomist and a .... (whatever an earth
scientist studying what goes on deep below the earth's surface is called)
talking about the "heavenly bodies" of all sorts. I could not really
concentrate on what they were saying because it was sort of technical and I
was doing something else at the time, but it started me wondering if any of
their knowledge and can be applied to the potter's? For example, when they
started talking about how absolutely stable and measurable iron is and how
the presence/non-presence of iron is of vital importance to all sorts of
things, it occurred to me that this may be of great interest to those who
formulate glazes. Is this "iron factor" maybe an overlooked element?

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser
