Hey Dannon and everyone,
After reading all the comments on Clayart about this project, and responding privately to all but this one, I have decided that this project probably cannot work at the price agreed upon. I had not yet committed to doing the project; I told her I'd see what was out there, and at what prices, so that I could at least, in good faith say no, if it turned out to be impossible.
If I had all the equipment needed to gas fire these suckers, it may have worked, but there's no way I can afford (financially, or time-wise) all the firings it would take to get them done, given the number of shelves and posts I have. I also do not have the funds to buy roughly twenty four more 28x14" shelves and posts, which I would require to get all the tiles fired in time. Again, plus allowing for breakage and warping.
There is still potential for projects involving these tiles, however, and there is a lot of wealth in this area (I live on an island, on the way to the wealthy islands...), so if I at least have a few samples laying around, I'd feel a lot more comfortable offering custom flooring at, say, $25 per square foot.
My gut instinct knew better. I was deeply agitated last night at the prospect of doing this, but felt pressured to do it because it could lead to better things. My poor boyfriend cleaned the gallery, laundry room and kitchen, trying to make me feel less stressed. Very sweet. All it really took was making a better decision, but don't tell him that, or he'll never do it again!
I appreciate the information on handmade tile pricing, and am interested in knowing (as someone also wrote about earlier) the going rate for handmade tile, sinks, etc. They will vary, of course, but it would help me feel better to have an idea of what's considered normal.
Anyway, I appreciate all the help, and now just need to figure out how to tile the outside of that mansion that I offered to do for $1.50 per square foot. Just kidding... Jules
