bisqued, porcelain, 12x12" tiles

Hey All!

I'm desperately hunting for tiles that I can glaze and fire to cone 10 for a client in these here parts. They'd be for a hallway floor, so no warping is allowed. It's amazing that no one carries them anymore. I've approached several people about doing them (some of them on Clayart, so sorry if they've already been asked about), and it seems like they are really impossible to find. Tile manufacturers don't have them (or, at least, they're not selling them).

I would need 600 of them, shipped to me within two weeks, and the total cost, including shipping, cannot exceed $2,326. I realize that this is basically mission impossible, but I have to ask, right? If I only had a ram press. My dad said, "Well, if it's just a piece of equipment that's keeping you from doing them yourself, why don't I just loan you the money?" Hah! I think he thought I just needed some rolling pins, or a mold. Anyway, please keep me posted if you know of anything! Thanks! Jules

Jules,

That comes to $3.87 per tile including shipping. So after your expenses:
firing, glaze, labor, shipping to client, what do you expect to make? Is
this a labor of love for a friend? Yikes! It may not be that they are
impossible to find but rather the price. Maybe this is what tiles go for
these days? I wouldn't know.

Thank you.

Let see if I understand you. You want someone to drop what they are
doing. Make and bisque 600 tiles for you. In two weeks. And all for the
price of under $4 a tile including shipping? Tile is heavy. do you have
any idea what it would cost to ship tile. Sorry Jules, but you are
dreaming. The price isn't good even if there was a reasonable turnaround
time. As for the Ram Press idea, a new press would cost you close to
$20,000. Unless you plan to make lots of pressed things (master dies can
cost $1500) that's a pretty good way to go broke fast. And even the used
press that the Palmers are selling would eat up all of your of your
profits.

Tony, you asked a good question. One I would like an answer to as well.
What DO handmade or customs tiles or art tiles go for these days.
Wouldn't want anyone to give away any trade secrets but it would be nice
to know whats in the ballpark!

they sent me a catalog recently advertising their sale on bisque ware
Imported Porcelain tiles. You might want to call/email them.
I didn't see 12x12 in their catalog...but that doesn't mean they don't sell
it. They do have 12x16, 10x14, 8x8 and other various sizes.
