ewwwww .... 1/4" is quite massive. if you have zero shrink clay i think =
that would work, but for general uses i think using something like 16 gua=
ge is the way to go ... even if its a large piece i would try 16 guage an=
d just biuld it up like a cage. besides, if your gonna use 1/4 inche, t=
hat is very hard to use (even bend) and boy is it a major pain. (i made m=
edieval chainmaille from that size stuff ... its like bending a buick aro=
und a light pole, requires too much force before you destroy it.)

I wonder if any ceramic sculptors have experience of reinforcing ceramic
sculptures with welded stainless steel armatures and firing the piece
with the steel embedded.
In this case the armatures are =BC diameter rod.
Any advice?
Thanks

Martin,
At NCECA I think it was Lana Wilson who used stainless steel
welding rod in her work. I believe she said it would fire to cone 10.
Maybe a test would be in order.

I wrote a short response to a question about stainless steel pins in
ceramics that was published in this current CM. I think additional
writing I did about additives will follow.

Both Pipenburg and Soldner use stainless rod in their work. I've never done
it but it is suppossed to work very well.

Greetings All----Jerry Rothman did some work incorporating Stainless Steel
and clay. Some very large works as I recall. The clay body he used was quite
course with minimal shrinkage. I think minimal shrinkage would be a key
factor in this type of process.

It is an interesting fact that the hole in the centre of a piece of =
material has the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the material =
which surrounds the vacant space.
