Okay these may be rather hurried and rough and the alert to the photo
posting a little premature (a little to much paperwork and other bs going on
right now). www.fotki.com/cgreen But my kiln is done and I have had my first
firing. I tried the ash glazes from last months' Ceramics monthly. These
may need to be spayed on heavier. I was not pleased with the results of
these glazes. I tried both the blue and the reddish ash glazes. The kiln is
great it fires evenly form top to bottom. While cone 10 fell in the top peep
it did not fall on the top shelf. Also while firing on a very windy day
there was a lot of back pressure around the burners--flame rolling out of
the kiln back along the burners - kind of scary.... I think that I need to
pull the burners back a bit.. or raise the chimney. Great reduction I placed
copper red test tiles throughout the kiln. All came out red. Bottom ones
were best. Eight hour firing. very even, relit at 1600 F. Not sure if that
made any difference. Flame was coming out the chimney during
reduction--raise chimney or....? .....but hey dem shinos are okay...

Thanks to Mark Ward who set me straight on the design and the burners.
Thanks to Vince for design consultation. Thanks to Larkin furnace for the
great deal on bricks and design consultation. And thanks to Lee Love and the
others that helped with the Buddhist offering. I did pour sake into one of
the sake cups made by Ken Beittel and placed a bowl with salt next to a
small very small Buddha figure ( I had to go to Barnes and Noble the day
before the firing to get a birthday card for my niece...at the check out I
was bidding time by looking at stuff and low and behold there was this
little package of a "itty biddy Buddha" I couldn't resist the synchronistic
offering. During the firing I swear someone sipped the sake during the
firing---no, no ...not me...:)
