Tony -

Will you need anyone to carry your bowl/chopsticks, tatami mat and slippers
for you. I could be tempted to volunteer to get to go on trip like that. I
might even chop some wood.

It will be 25 years this July since i built my first woodkiln- an Olsen
fastfire. so last night i received word that I am invited as a guest to the
Goshagarwara Woodfire Conference in northern Japan this July- August. Guess
who will be building and firing a woodkiln there- Fred Olsen. this will be a
great honour to work with 22 other potters from around the world for 10
days, eating, sleeping, and breathing clay for 2 weeks. My understanding is
that Goshagawara is being built as a potters artists in residence with
housing, meals etc so that after this summer it will be open to potters to
go and work/fire woodkilns in Japan for short/or extended times. It is in
the north part of the country where red pine is abundant and there are many
chamber kilns on site.
I'm still in a bit of a fog, but on my return I will of course keep Clayart
abreast of this fantastic place to go and study. I'd like to thank Richard
Selfridge for throwing my hat into the ring and Carol Anne Michealson for
seconding the motion. Carol Anne will be my Canuck partner. Between the two
of us there may be a shortage of clay in Japan this fall.
You can go on line and search makigama (means wood kiln) to see last years
Goshagawara conference- some what larger last year 60? potters.
I hope to contact Lee for some guidance of what to see and do.
And the sun is shining today. Life is good!
Cheers,
Tony
