We were all young once, and foolish, faddish, insecure, unsure..

We learned through experience slowly and sometimes expensively what is or
is not important.

Those of us that are ripened(translation-old) know the value of love
offered freely ,of good solid craftsmanship, of the value of truth etc
etc..
We earned that knowledge through time and living. We are mostly happier
than when we were young.

The young will always believe that because they feel something it is
so.The old will always believe that the changes taking place in society
are often threatening their standards.

Our generation(the ripe sages among us) used to look up as children when
an airplane went by. Now we barely blink at shuttles to the stars. The
New Yorker wouldn't print "damn" and now there is nothing that is
unprintable. I wore blue jeans and was stared at, in 1947..That was the
Grunge of our day.

Some Greek in olden times and I wish I remembered his name, wrote at
great length about the youth of his time and how all standards were lost
etc etc..
Could be printed right here on Clayart, just change the Greek's name to
Clayboy or something.

Yes, there is a lot of trash art out there(No, I do not "get" Mathew
Barney) but there are also good artists and Van Gogh never sold a
painting nor achieved anygrants or support and yes, the world is
changing, it is strange to us, but it is NOT coming to an end.

We are all slower than the changes that are happening. Sometimes I get
scared , but then i look at history( a cursory glance ) or I read a note
on Clayart from Katie Ellis..teenager with her wits about her and her
heart filled with clay, and I stop worrying.

Dear Elca~

Thank you. I was touched that you metioned me in your
post. Please do not worry. There are so many
wonderful people in my generation...it's just sad that
teenagers who seem to be making bad decisions and
choices have set an example that has changed the faith
that adults seem to have in us. They'll learn.
