call for entries for upcoming lark book

updated thu 24 apr 03

Paul Andrew Wandless on tue 15 apr 03

A call for entries is being extended to you for an upcoming book
entitled Alternative Firing Methods & Kilns (working title) by James C.
Watkins and Paul Andrew Wandless. Work using raku, low-fired
saggar, low-salt, and fuming techniques, and pit, barrel, and sawdust
firing are needed. Work made using terra sigillata and multi-firing
practices, using any combination or variation of the above-mentioned
techniques, are also welcomed.

Please send slides and form directly to Lark Books, using the
address on the bottom of the entry form, by May 15th, 2003. Please go
to http://www.larkbooks.com to download the forms and read the
guidelines. On the Lark Books home page, click on "Work With Lark"
and then click on "Artist Submissions." Please feel free to pass the
forms and information along to friends and colleagues. Featured
artists will
receive a complimentary copy of the book.

Thanks for your interest and contribution to this project.

I would like to really encourage many of you to submit entries for this
book. While 500 Teapots was great, there was a lot of repetition of
artists, and I have to wonder if that was due to lack of entries. I have
seen much of your work and it is great, so please don't not submit because
you don't think you will get in!

Can a newby submit an entry ? or do you have to be a famous mud person
like dannon ,RR, or Robin hopper?????

In all cases like this, it's open to everyone. In fact, these opportunities
are usually also offered via ads running for months in the classified
section of the ceramics magazines.

And lots of "unknowns" will end up in the book as Lark's craft books are
lavishly illustrated with many photos. However, selection will depend not
only on whether the ceramic piece is interesting and of good quality, but
how well it is photographed. Though some potters do their own photography
quite successfully, this usually means having your work shot professionally
by someone experienced at photographing crafts.

Of course, a professional photograph is no guarantee you'll get in, but I'd
encourage to to go for it if you think you have some pretty good work that
fits in to the topic of the book.

And be sure to follow to a tee any and all instructions provided by Lark
regarding submissions.
Good luck,

Diane Winters in Oakland/Berkeley
(who was delighted at the very beginning of my tile making career to have
quite a few examples in Lark's book on Handmade Tiles)

Alternative Firing Methods & Kilns

Alternative Firing Methods & Kilns (working title), by James C. Watkins and
Paul Andrew Wandless, will demonstrate various ceramic firing techniques in
low-cost kilns you can make yourself. Color photos and step-by-step
instructions will make each process clear and easy to execute. Finished
pieces from each process illustrate the rich variety of results possible with
these low-fire methods. Featured artists will receive full credit and a
complimentary copy of the book. If you would like to submit images of your
original work for possible inclusion, please click on the following link:

Dear Vicki Hardin,=20

Please tell me I am incorrect in forming an opinion that this is just =
another spin on Vanity Publishing.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.

Ivor, I don't know that I am the person who should answer this . I saw the
post asking for more info and had it, so shared. I do have an opinion based
on having known James Watkins for the past 20 years and that is that I have
never known him to go into something that he does not whole heartedly beleive
in. And he seems very excited about this book. He has asked that details be
shared about firing processes and I believe this will be incorprated into the
book. I see this as an opportunity for people like me who don't have the big
bucks to promote their work. I would encourage all you raku and pit fire
people to send in your slides! Remember, the deadline is May 15th and you
can get more info

You are. Lark books are outstanding. I have the "500 bowls" (and two friends
with bowls in it). It's an outstanding book and I can spend hours going
through it.

Good curation, good production, great distribution, and Lark has an
enviable rep among book
folks in general. Apparently, they've decided that they can make money
AND treat contributors
ethically.

A fan,
Roger

There is something disturbing about these books, actually two things.
The second thing is of course if they would use one of my mugs there I would tell you
it is the best book and might buy a copy or two to send to friends and relatives. In my
case not only Lark would win but also USP!
The point is, what disturbs me about such books the way Roger writes, is the using of
potters like they were little kids that will pay all cost( of their parents money) to buy
posters of their admired stars:living ones or animated ones!
Bowls, to be honest ( the king is naked?) are very simple shapes. Their beauty is
within their simplicity.
Do I buy this book to see and learn? 500!
Why not 200 and deeper stories about materials& inspiration?
Are there 500 pages?
Does each mug gets it's own page?
About T pots About mugs
About anything
Too many are too much: 500 is a nice number
Yet I am willing to help Lark with their new book: 500 best works of Ababi. That book
will be different I promise!

I thought the idea of a 500 Teapot book was ridiculous too (your words -
disturbing) until I saw it........it's magnificient...well worth
purchasing, savoring and embracing. No text, no clutter of words.....just
500 inspirational teapots. I'm satisfied.

Also, think of it as free advertising. It never hurts to have your
work, 'out there' being seen.

advertise, advertise'.

That's a good one..! and advertise they do, too...

Not "Billions and Billions of aerteriosclerotics from the
conjealed oxidized grease of millions upon millions of grim
cattle-fed 'beef' ( or their tumors, 'growths' and 'downer'
kin,) to do their corporate part to propigate long term
Spongiform Encephalopathy as an happy incidental."...?

Hmmm!

With Cheese!

A 'ronald-mc-nvCJd'...dressed as a 'prion' maybe,
gesticulatin' and jumpin' around betwixt the 'arches' with
the riveted noses-pressed-to-the-glass kiddies all a-twitter
behind the car windows as one drive bye?

"Oh! May we get one please, daddy??? Puhhhh-leeeeeeeeezzzzze
may
we???!!!Puhhhhhhhhleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
eeeeeeezzze!!!"

Oh...how can one resist!

(I couldn't...! - sorry Frank!)

...in good fun,

Phil
