John, there are two ways to compensate for thermocouple drift:
Thermocouple Offset
Cone Offset
These two adjustments are available on the Orton Sentry controller and
the Bartlett controller. (Most brands of kilns are equipped with the
Bartlett.)
At first, we had only Thermocouple Offset. But people wanted a way to
adjust the temperature for a specific range of cones without affecting
other cones. So we added Cone Offset.
Thermocouple Offset changes the calibration for all temperatures.
Cone Offset changes the calibration for a specific range of cones.
As a rule of thumb, if the controller needs to be adjusted by more than
30 deg. F, the thermocouple should be replaced.
You probably have a Bartlett controller. The instructions for using
these features will vary depending on the kiln brand. This is because
the controller software is modified slightly for each kiln brand.
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Arnold Howard
