thank you all for a good open debate
on an issue that always needs airing.
again, i dropped a post to stimulate
conversation and thought.
i have had several very thoughtful posts
from folks that are trying hard to be new
potters...adult folks that need to understand
that they are in control of their new found
passion. they need to know that they can
keep on working, they do not need degrees
and can get all the help they need from clayart
friends. but, their life is in their own hands.
and, that is what they want.
we will not resolve much of anything, but we
can openly discuss these issues.
my last thought on this issue is that
we as artists have chosen the path of
independence. we succeed with our
work. no one gets to share the success,
but, we also get all of the failure. it is hard
to pass the buck when you are an artist.
it stops with you...me.
no, i am not anyone's dad. i am just
a potter doing a job. i have a passion
for the craft. and, yes, i am fiercely independent.
it is the reason i do not work in corporate america.
i am my own boss. and, always have been.
and that bothers some folks that want their lives
run by committee.

Well said, Mel.
I am a little more independent than most. I don't think the government
should subidize schools either. If we got to keep our school taxes we could
teach our own little nippers or pay a QUALIFIED person to educate them. Then
we wouldn't have the attitude of entitlement that we have now.
