howdy everyone,
this question is for those of you who mix glazes...i have been offered bags
and bags of "ottowa silia and zinc oxide" (separately bagged). they used to
belong to a glass mixer; is this the same stuff we put in our glazes?
they're quite old, and the zinc oxide is rather lumpy. Assuming that I can
add 'em to the glaze mix, is the age a problem, or can i just bang out the
lumps and go for it?
as you can tell, i'm kinda new to this sort of thing but always excited to
get free stuff!
thank you!

Lucky you! Zinc Ox. and silica are galze ingredients. Don't worry about
the lumps. When dry mixing just crush the lumps for accurate measure.
Always add the dry mix to water. Let it soak a little and then sift it.
If you soak it, the lumps are not so difficult to screen.
Best wishes,

Just a quick warning about silica - it comes in many mesh sizes - some will
be like sand and that will not work well in glazes.
Anything below 200 mesh could be a problem so make sure you do a test
before making up any large batches.
Don't be thinking a bag of silica is valuable - it's the cheapest stuff we
buy - ruin one pot and you loss any avantage you think you have.
