Dear Marcia Selsor,
You were fortunate to access the old texts and to be able to read them.
Yes, there is a consensus that Moorish or smoked lustre is a reduction =
process. I think this is brought out in the book by Piccolpasso who =
describes the best sorts of grasses to get the right conditions. I have =
found that with Silver Sulphide in Ochre as the active agent good =
metallic sheens of yellow, pink, turquoise and pale blue are possible =
with an atmosphere created by burning Rosin and by using LPG. =
Temperature is a critical factor as is the Glass Transition Temperature =
of the glaze. So far given theory does not tell us how to determine =
these properties so we guess just as much as the ancients did. As did =
they, we test, observe, record, speculate and start over again.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis, Redhill, South Australia
