I have an 11.some-odd cubic foot Oly oval kiln that I bought in 11/01, =
so it's not very old. It has a computer controller. Last firing was a =
^6 glaze firing, after which the readout should have flashed CPT =
(complete) 10:23 (length of firing time) and a temperature. Where the =
temperature should be, the readout now says FAIL. =20
Tried to start the kiln today and it won't go. Is there anything I can =
do to the thing myself (any way to reset the thing?) or do I have to =
call the service guy? There was no power failure or anything like that.
Thanks
L

Usually when you get a Fail message on a Bartlett controller it means that
you have lost a thermocouple. Try pushing 1 or 3 to see if you are getting a
signal from those thermocouples.
If you are still having trouble with your controller, call Bartlett. They are
really helpful folks. You should have a small instruction booklet that
explains all of the error messages that came with your kiln.

You probably have a bad thermocouple. The paper clip test is the correct
thing way to verify that the thermocouple is bad. If you are concerned
about getting shocked, turn off the breaker to the kiln, insert the
paperclip under the two screws for the thermocouple and then turn the
breaker back on. You can then start the kiln. If you get a temperature
reading, you know that you need to replace the thermocouple.

Hello Rob Haugen
Thanks for your response, but I have a correction. I talked with Rob
Bartlett (from Bartlett Instruments, maker of said controller) this
afternoon and he says that the paperclip test is NOT the way to test the
thermocouple on the newer V6CF controllers. He told me that the
thermocouple can be tested electronically without ever removing the cover of
the controller. (He told me how to do this test, but I was in a restaurant
on a cell phone, so don't remember all the specifics, however, it was easy
and not dangerous like the paperclip test might be.) Boy do I wish I had
known about the electronic test yesterday..........
Thanks again!
