Dear William,
You must find David MacDonald's work. It is featured in many collections,
including articles sometimes in CM, books, etc. He was my professor at
Syracuse University. I remember him always for his serious spirit that was
both giving and demanding. He is still at Syracuse. A story about when he
was making ceramics in the mid 70's, his work was angry- angry about the
African American situation, history, reality. He tells about an elder woman
who asked him a question after viewing the work in his show "Is there
anything good about being black?" It made an impression on David and about
from that time on, he began to celebrate American African culture in his
work. I am sure you can find examples of his writings and work
effortlessly. Huge platters are his trademark, as well as grooved and
textured forms, functional. He is also an active workshop giver around the
USA. I hope to meet him again.
