Hi,
I am trying to save to my hard drive ( Power Mac /7200 ) some of the
beautiful pots found on David Dawson African Clay Pots site. I can't do
it. I click on save and get "spacer.GIF" which when I try to open it -
is blank and at the top it says "1x1pixel",
has anybody else tried to save any of these images? I tried it on the
schools G-3 Mac with the same results. Any ideas? Thanks Mike Gordon

they dont want us to be able to steal the pictures...

OK, here is the evil, devious way to defeat this clever web designer. But
I know all of you will only use this info for good, educational purposes, so...
Anyway, go to the website, which you remember is:
http://www.douglasdawson.com/
The enlarged images that go with the thumbnails are stored in a directory
called "images", and they are named by their catalog numbers, with a .jpg
extension. So, to get the full sized image of #10760, in a form that you
can save to your hard drive, you would type in the following URL:
http://www.douglasdawson.com/images/10760.jpg
This should pull up just the image.
Then, on a PC, just right click the image and Save Picture As. I don't
know the routine on a Mac, but whatever you normally do should work. You
should be able to print the images as well.

Try holding down your mouse on an image on the master page and
then selecting "save as"from the menu that pops up. The pic
should how up on your desktop as a jpg image with the ID number
shown on the page of pots. Don't try to save after double
clicking on the image. That produced the result you got. They
are pretty small, thumbnails about 1.5 by 2 inches....
I think the bigger image you get after double clicking on the
thumbnail isn't the usual bigger pic on it's own page. It must
be created by computer magic, enlarging the thumbnail in some
spooky ephemeral way....
Jennifer, who can't keep up with the computer age.... ;-)

You can always do a "print screen". On a windows computer, holding the
function key down, you select "Prt SC" or whatever it says on your
keyboard. This copies the image on the screen to your "clipboard". THen
you can paste that image into a word doc, or into your graphics software
of wherever you want it. And then save it.
Not that I'm advocating stealing other people's images, but I too like
to have pictures of amazing things around me. And there is almost
nothing anyone can do to prevent you making a picture of whatever
appears on your screen. If you have graphics software that has a
"capture" capability, you can do this as well.

For MAC users:
I went to the topmost site on Chris' post (below). Got a Welcome page and
clicked on Current Exhibit. Got a single image with lizards. Clicked on
that and got a bunch of images, each of which I could enlarge by clicking
on it.
This was on my G3 (beige). I had previously always saved entire websites
to a folder for future reference, that could then be opened when I wish.
But I just tried saving only the images by going to File, then Save As, and
it worked.
I never saw anything marked Images or Directory, and never got anywhere
with the second site below, just got a single image that went nowhere.

Sorry, I left out part of the original URL, which should have been:
http://www.douglasdawson.com/africanclay.html
Then to save specific images, you have to remove the "africanclay.html"
part and instead type "images/10760.jpg" at the end of the main
URL. Substitute other catalog numbers for 10760 in order to get the
picture you want.
