Howowowdy all,
So close I tell ya, so close. Teacher and I have been trying to build a
raku kiln from an old paragon high fire for what seems like centuries.
Well this weekend, we finally turned the body back over and placed it on
its new base--two courses of ifb. I used angle iron to tie the old kiln
body to the metal bottom.
Today I assembled and tested the reg/burner assembly. Worked great. I
also made the kiln lid out of kaowool and hardware cloth. I was working
pretty efficiently. Had on my double dust mask/face shield and work
gloves the whole time. Well almost the whole time. Anyway. It's done!
We have a raku kiln. Of course I wanted to put in a shelf, a cone and
try it out. We don't as yet have any bisqued pots to put in it. Got
the burner positioned on cinder blocks and scrap ifbs, adjusted the psi
to about 10, eased open the needle valve, struck the sparker and ...
Fire. Yeah. We turned it up maybe 1/2 way and let it go for a few
minutes. Looks good (we aren't using a target brick) with the flames
just emerging past the back of the kiln shelf. Of course I was in a
hurry because I had to go to work (sucks), so I opened it up almost full
blast, pulled the burner back out the port and let it go for a little
bit. Sounded great! I just wanted to see some bricks get red. Teacher
laughed at me and said they wouldn't.
But darn it if I didn't look down at my watch and realize I had to leave
5 minutes ago. Argh!!!!!!!!!! We had to shut down that beauty before
anything happened. Talk about frustration! Tomorrow will be a
different story. I'm going to melt something in there even if it's
teacher's cat.
