Dear Friends,
I believe Depleted Metallic Uranium is used as an insert in some =
projectiles. It serves two functions. One, to transfer a greater amount =
of kinetic energy from the propellant down a smaller gun barrel, giving =
a greater range for a smaller cost of a shorter gun with a smaller bore. =
Two, It creates a great amount of heat through the conversion of kinetic =
energy as it passes through its target, usually armour plate. There is =
sufficient heat to vaporise the metal which is pyrophoric anyway and =
high enough temperature to melt a hole in the target armour. Burning is =
combining with oxygen in the air. Hence, in our terms, Uranium Oxide is =
an end product, a ceramic substance. Since there is only a small crew in =
a tank, it is merely a Weapon of Limited Destruction.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis
