Hi, All,

Over the weekend I tried a number of the many colorants and
combinations thereof to see how they worked out.
Here are the results so far:

Glaze: Bory 1, fired to ^10
glaze recipe here:
http://crystalline-ceramics.info/cone8-10_opaque_glazes.html
(I'm not trying necessarily to get a crystal glaze; it's just
what I had on hand at the moment.)

Colors and Combinations:

3% Cobalt Carb (base for comparison): its usual gorgeous ultramarine self.

5% Neodymium Oxide: Pale Lavendar under incandescent light,
Powder Blue in fluorescent light, Pale Periwinkle in the sun.
Opaque.

5% Pansy Purple Mason Stain: Medium blue-grey, semi-opaque,
nothing to write home about.

1.5 Cobalt Carb, 1.5 RIO: Opaque light
greyish blue.

1.5 Cobalt Carb, 1.5 Manganase Diox: Opaque warm-greyish blue.

1.5 Cobalt Carb, 2.5 Neodymium Ox: Pale greyish periwinkle,
slightly variable in color, with cornflower blue crystals which
do not vary.

1,5 Cobalt Carb, 2.5 Mason 6006 Deep Crimson: Oooo, this isn't nearly
purple, but
what a great combination! Streaky-grey-blue and ecru, with bronzy
spots (metallic) all over it. Crystals from slate blue to olive
green to boot. But alas, not purple.

2.5 Neodymium Ox, 2 Mason 6006 Crimson:
Mostly white but where the glaze pooled, there is some pink and
some teal... go figure.

1.5 Cobalt Carb, 1.5 Erbium Oxide: Pale but fairly opaque
periwinkle, actually the closest to purple of the bunch.

1.5 Cobalt Carb, 2 Pansy Purple Mason Stain: semi-opaque
medium delft blue.

5% Gold Powder: As thickens, it goes from white to light magenta
(the "Purple of Cassius") to brilliant yellow.

I'm going to try all these combinations again in a zinc-free glaze
and see what I get.

Fa

Fara, Add one more colorant combo to the next round of tests. I hesitate to
say I've "got" a good purple when I haven't had time to repeat the test.(We
all know what curses we bring on ourselves bragging about a glaze too soon.)
In a glaze where nickle carb 2% makes blue green adding 2% manganese dioxide
gave me tan crystals in a lovely purple. I will share the recipe but it is a
cone 10 I have recently adjusted to cone 5. Not throughly tested and I don't
know how much the extra lithium and dolomite and gerstley have affected the
color response. If you have a nickle blue glaze, its worth trying it with
manganese.
