Dear Eliza,
After reading your post, thought possibly your pin hole may be to blame.
Sometimes I have pushed the needle into the clay and wondered why my work
blew up. Well, upon examination, found that there was a bit of clay pushed
forward but stuck to the needle point. When retracting the needle, the wet
clay then stuck to and plugged the little needle hole. You can check this
by breaking the pot and examining the needle hole.
