How are you able to distinguish between this phenomenon and the breakdown
between flock structures?
If you analyse the forces imposed in application of vertical pressure on the
inner base of the pot you may find that this is parallel to the crack
surface not normal to it. Pressure applied to the side will assist in
bringing the faces of the facture towards each other. Several people have
commented on their success applying a squeeze from the side."

Pressure from the side only helps when the foot is narrow. Grog or sand in
the claybody certainly helps limit the occurrence of S-cracks. But the best
technique to limit S-cracks is still compressing the bottom. Whether it
alligns the platelets or reduces the water layers or whatever the hell it
does, it works. I certainly don't need any more proof than that. I teach
the technique to my students, and it always helps them eliminate S-cracks.
