Dear Ellie Blair,
The price of Bullion Gold in kilogram ingots has been rising since 9/11 =
from around $US 280.00 per ounce Troy (30 grams) and now stands at about =
$US 350.00 per ounce Troy.=20
A couple of years ago I paid about $Au 24.00 for 2 grams of Engelhard =
Liquid Bright Gold. So the price you have been quoted sounds like a =
steal.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis

Englehard makes a variety of gold materials for ceramic applications
(brushing, pad printing, banding, screen printing, ..) that range from 3 -
10% gold in them according to their presentation at a meeting of The Society
of Glass and Ceramics Decorators conference I attended. Their article in the
Jan. 1985 issue of "Screen Printing" magazine states the "fired gold is
22-karet with additives present to make the gold adhere". "Fired thickness
will be around .125 micron, or approximately 160 times less than the
wet-film thickness."
The last gold I bought from them was $385.00 for 100 grams. I bought it to
print decals and also have used it thinned out to brush on and it too fired
out with good results.

Hi Ivor,
That seems to be the general opinion. I am going to go for it.
Thanks

I bought liquified gold once - in this case pure gold dissolved in an
organic solvent - for use on porcelain. I forget the exact quantity now,
but cost me just under $1000. I had to prepay to cover price of gold on
the market.

Main point: the liquid gold arrived with a large label of skull and
crossbones on the front and the words "POISON" in large letters across
the front. The stuff was highly toxic to ones liver, and breathing any
fumes at all - either from the bottle or from the firing was clearly a
no-no and expressly stated on the front of the bottle. I sprayed it
outdoors, with a fan turned on to carry the overspray down wind, wore
mask and gloves. And no one was permitted in my studio when it was fired.

My experience.

Be cautious with this stuff.

one should definitely wear a mask FOR FUMES. A mask with filters.

Here's a useful site for info on different forms of gold and how to use;
however, it does not go into the toxic nature of the fumes. ALL lusters
have toxic fumes and should be applied while you are wearing a filter mask.
Don't get turned off because this is a hobby china painters site! They are
the ones who use this stuff all the time--and porcelain doll painters.

Hi John,
That wasn't an experience that I would want. We must be talking about
different things. The gold I am thinking of costs 15.00 for a one ounce
bottle. You need to wear a mask when applying that is for sure but it isn't
as toxic as what you are describing. I have my kiln vented to the outside
and have not had any back up of fumes in my studio. Do you think this will
help? The gold you got sounds like it was pure and maybe mixed with
something to make it fluid. I am going to order some from a place
recommended by a person on the list and I'll let you know how it worked and
if I had any of the problems you had. If not you may want to try the
process again.
Later
Ellie B.
