In the past week or so we have a thread about installing a gas kiln. The we
have had one on burning used motor oils.

BUT only one person cried :Jewett....

Now it is a fact that over the years Ceramics Monthly's Letters column has
published numbers of TEARFUL LETTERS, and once or twice there have been
TEARFUL QUERIES to the Question section. And all of these truly sad
messages say: "I build a Blah kiln, and sank $6000 into it, and now the gas
people won't give me a big enough tank because of zoning; the gas company
won't give me enough pressure; the fuel company will not give me a big
enough oil tank, because of zoning; the fire department won't give me a
permit, the insurance agent has rejected me; and on and on and on..Some
localities ban woodburning kilns entirely....

I remember one poor man who built a kiln in a shed on his
parents'property--to find out that they would lose their homeowners
insurance if the fired the thing.

Some people were so close--but all their money was gone and they could not
get the $ necessary to complete the job which means doing what THEY ask.

Sure there is something counter-cultural and free-spirited in ignoring the
agencies, the utilities, the fire department, the zoning board.....But it is
as costly risk, so please check all the details of the what is and is not
permitted before you invest a cent....
