or according to an old book,
Use an old handkerchief or lintless cloth. Cheesecloth is fine. Hemmed is
better to prevent lint.
Dip in water, wring until quite dry, sprinkle with varnish from a brush.
Refold and rewring so the varnish permeate the cloth. Keep it rolled in sheet
plastic or waxed paper to prevent it from drying out. Dampen to rehydrate.
Varnish is alcohol based as opposed to shellac that is ammonia based. I don't
know if any other water based wood finish would work for this. Sticky so wear
gloves.
