buying first kiln

I am about to purchase an electric kiln (after years of firing at my local
craft centers). Are the L&L ads correct about the advantages of the
elements holders (or just hype)? The choice for me is between the L&L e28S
and the Skutt KM-1218-3. Opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of
either are welcomed.

Well personally I don't think its hype! I have a ancient L&L kiln that I
bought third hand from school. To say the least it had a hard life, been
fired a bunch and not always treated the best. There glaze drips every
where but the elements are still sitting in the holders just like they do
when they come from the factory. There are no broken down bricks around
the elements with wire hanging in all directions that I have seen in just
about every other brand of kiln. If I have any criticism of L & L its the
infinite switches that didn't seem to hold up. Haven't used one since 83
with infinite switches so may be they have improved on them. My old L & L
just has hi med low.

At school we have 5 electric kilns, 4 are L&L, the one is Axner Super
kiln (Olympic). The biggest advantage to the L&L is the element
holders that allow for easier replacement of the elements. No element
pins are required and the IFB is not damaged when pulling out old
elements.
Just this past semester I replaced the elements in the Super kiln.
Did slightly damage some IFB getting out the old elements, but
putting in new and anchoring with element pins not that big a deal.
What was a pain in the patoot was getting down to the element in the
floor. This is their biggest kiln and it's a long way down to the
floor. Had to stand on 2 cinder blocks then hang upside down over the
top edge of the kiln. Thank goodness I have plenty of padding on my
stomach!
Anyway, yes, the L&L is worth it if you plan to fire a lot or are
going to do crystalline glazes where elements will need more frequent
replacement.

So what are people's electric kiln preferences? What
kilns do you like and why and are there any real dogs?
I'm also in the market for my first (small, mostly
for tiles) kiln and could use some advice. Thanks.
