Hi Stacey -

How formal is your co-op in terms of legal strictures, how is the pie
divided, how many members will you have, etc..... Do you have a formal
(legal) agreement for the members?

If you could share any of this info wiwth us it would be greatly
appreciated. I will also forward any posts I receive.

Hi Les,
Well....we are getting pretty formal. We have gotten a business license and resale license (so we can have retail section of the building). This is where we are trying to find out how other people are doing it, because we don't how deep we should get ourselves into this.
We have 5 Board of Directors (of which I am one) the board of directors are all Founding Members (we have 10) who payed more, so we could get this thing up and running. We have about 10 Partners and 5 Associates. We know there will be more once we open, because a lot of the people who we talked to want to join, but didn't want to do any work to get this thing up and running. I have noticed that a lot of the people I have talked to only let people in after their work has been juried, but I don't think we would have been able to bring enough "high end" artists on to start this.I mean we have people who are only beginners. But they needed a place to work, so we are trying to be flexible. We are running into problems as far as setting up contracts for each level that people come in on. Each member pays a yearly membership fee (this allows us to pay back the people who are selling us their equipment). Then they pay a studio fee, which they can pay month by month, weekly, or even just on an hourly basis. (this will help us pay rent, utilities, etc.) How are you setting your co-op up? Who in your group gets keys to the building? will you have set hours? How are you covering those hours?

Our problem is, is that most of our members have fulltime jobs, so we are also running into a problem about being open certain hours. We are talking about trading hours for membership and studio fees......We'll see. Anyways, I would love to hear how it's going for you. Let me know.
Thanks,
Stacey Ballard
