african scam - spanish scam?

Dear Mel

The scam is called the 419 scam, named after the legislation in Nigeria
which was created to prosecute these scammers. Here in South Africa, it
makes no sense to call it the African scam, because we are also here in
Africa, and we are also plagued by it.

So it is not about being PC or not, but about calling the scam by its name
and not giving all Africans a bad name because of these guys. By the same
token, a Nigerian colleague of mine gets cross when it is called the
Nigerian scam.

In fact, the scam has been around for decades - in the 1920's it was known
as the Spanish Prisoner scam, because the letters purported to be from the
family of an imprisoned Spanish aristocrat.

It should actually be called the "Advanced Fee Fraud", because the 419 scam
is just an electronic spin on this much older fraud.

I didn't realize we were not supposed to mention the continent of
africa in our quest for political correctness.

I think there is some legal loophole in Nigeria that keeps them from
avoiding prosecution, or so I recently read.
