Dear Kurt,
Back on the list, again...

I was struck by your mention of an old friend, Oxford Spar. It got me off
on a tangent of searching my old Studio Potter Magazines, all the way back
to 1974, because I vaguely remember an article there by the owner of the
quarry when he decided to shut down. But, alas, no luck...if someone knows
of it's whereabouts, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

But as to your question...Oxford Spar is indeed a potash spar, but it's
proportion of potash to soda is somewhat lower than many potash spars.
It's ratio of potassium to sodium is 1.59, which puts it somewhere between
Eureka Spar (is that still around?) and Kona A-3. Nevertheless, the common
wisdom is that Custer is an apt substitute, despite it's K-Na ratio of 2.31.

I hope this is an adequate answer to your question. What I'm grateful for
is the excuse you gave me to dive back into those old SP magazines. Gave
me a chance to rediscover what a great read it is, and to see many of my
oldest potter friends as they looked 20-30 years ago. What a treat!

Best,
Richard Aerni

Go here:

Then search for custer feldspar and use the line at the top
to click back and forth between them to compare. YOu will notice that
the chemistry is very similar, custer is higher in K2O but
every thing else is almost the same.
