Hi, All,
Has anyone else out there had problems with Laguna's
Crystal Palace glaze? I've got a hundred pounds of
batch #77495 that doesn't work. If anybody out there
has any of this batch that does work I'd like to hear
from you. Right now I'm out about $200 and a tad furious...

Hi, Fara,
When I first re-started potting again a few years ago, I bought some ^5-6
prepared glazes, and Laguna's Crystal Palace glaze was among them. I could
not make it work; it always seemed to lump up on the pots, so I through it
out. I believe that Laguna's Jon Pacini, some time back, noted on Clayart
that Laguna has discontinued that glaze. You might check with Laguna
(www.lagunaclay.com). I wonder if Jon could give you the recipe for the
glaze so that a knowledgeable Clayart glaze person might help you to adjust
the glaze.
Wiser now, I know that if a prepared glaze causes trouble, I do not know the
constituents of the glaze to know how to adjust it. I now mix my own glazes
and use a couple of glaze calculation programs that have made a world of
difference.
Sorry you put so much money into the glaze.

If anyone has had problems with this batch of glaze I would like to hear
from you also. Fa has 100# of a 1000# batch that was made in July of 2002.
The other 900# is out there somewhere.
Fa was kind enough to send some of this batch in to me for evaluation. The
test firings I did with that sample turned out fine. I am somewhat
perplexed by the results of the tests. I've talked with her at length about
the situation. I have no doubt that she could not get the glaze to work for
her, but why is a mystery to me.
In case you are wondering about the procedure I used for the comparisons
here's a brief outline---
I threw three shallow bowls out of Porcelain, approx 7 in. diameter and 1
1/2 in deep. same amount of clay for all three. bisque fired them stacked
all together, ^04. Mixed 100 grams of glaze with equal amounts of water and
coated the interior surface of each bowl respectively, using all 100 grms on
each of the individual bowls. The bowls were placed on the same shelf in a
triangular pattern in a Skutt 818-3 kiln and fired using the recommended
firing cycle.
The glaze that Fa couldn't get to work satisfactorily for her, turned out
the best for me. Large, well defined crystals, and as I say, better actually
than the other two.---- go figure!!! same surface area, same amount of
glaze, same shelf on the kiln, all three giving slightly different results.
At first I thought it was just me, but I had our glaze chemist Juan Aguilera
repeat the tests on some vertical surfaces and he got similar results.
Anybody with some of this particular batch, please contact me with your
results.
Best regards

Hi, Charles,
I've been using Crystal Palace for years; never had a problem
which is why I bought so much and recommended it on the
website and in the first edition of the book. It's just this
one batch. Apparently I can't return it (UPS told me they
won't ship powders unless they're in their original containers).
I did send a sample back to Laguna for them to test and they said it
works for them. I tried it again and it just doesn't.
It's not me, I'm sure, because all my other glazes work fine.
So I'm trying to find out if other people who have glaze from
this same batch are also having problems.

Hello Fara
Perhaps something had changed with the clay body?
