I have finally after many years of dreaming and struggling for time , completed my first sell-able teapot . a damn fine one too ...but I have never sold a tea set and have no idea what to charge for it

I'm not tooting my own horn when I say this but it is a very good tea set.
It even pours without trouble ( I remembered to put the air hole in the lid this time) and just one little drop goes down the spout after pouring but all the people who've been helping me and advising me in the past month have plainly stated that they will not get involved with pricing (ARGH)

I was thinking around $45 but that would cover if it was purchased through me ....or would that be too much or too little

and I have a gallery that want's to sell my work but would $85 (gallerie's % added ) be too much through a gallery or too little ?

I have been told that underpricing is just as much a sin as over pricing

HELP

$45!!! You're going to take away my crown for being the Queen of
Underpricing.=20

A decent teapot, in my mind, should be at LEAST $100. I recently
raised my priced to $150 with no complaints. A tea set should be
considerable more, depending on how many pieces are involved.

Teapots are very difficult to make, and require assembly, etc. Don't
sell yourself - or your work - short.

Hi Ian,

Have you visited the gallery? What kind of prices do you see on
teapots there?

I think it is easier to raise originally low prices than to lower
higher prices. What other work are you selling to the gallery?

For my first show in Mashiko (which we took down today), I think I
priced my largest work too low and some of the smaller things too high. Will
make adjustments for the next time. I tend to price work for every day use a
little lower, so folks won't be afraid to use things. At my show, I
purposely had "$10.00" pickle dishes so everyone could find something they could
afford. I intend to continue this practices. I don't mind if wealthy folks
buy may work (actually, I appreciated their support!), but I also always want
some of my work to be purchasable to any school kid, if he skips his lunch.

When I was a poor kid growing up in the countryside of Michigan, I
could always skip lunch and use the buck to buy a paperback book. These
inexpensive books saved my life, along with public libraries.

To me, it is more important to inspire people with my work than to sell
them my work. I'm a firm believe in the fact that all humans were met to be
creative and not simply reduced to "consumer" status. Creation is Life.
Consumption is Death.

"Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation),there is one elementary truth
the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the
moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. A whole stream
of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of
unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have
dreamt would have come his way." --W.H. Murry
