melting glass bottles in a kiln

Anywhere from cone 016-cone 012 ought to do it. The shelves was should be
freshly washed with a kiln wash that is at least 50% alumina. Different
glass, even the same colors melts at different temeratures according to
manufacturer and batch. Take it up slowly and come down slowly to and from
1100 F, although it is okay to peek frequently above 1000. It is also okay
to crash the kiln by holding the lid open once the glass has achieved it's
desired degree of meltiness until 1000 degrees and then closing it up to
cool slowly the rest of the way. This will prevent devitrification and
freeze the shape you want. A great book, "Kiln-Fired Glass" is wonderful.

You can melt glass bottles together to get interesting shapes. If you do
this, however, the glass bottles must be of the same brand and color.
Otherwise they will probably crack. This is because glass is
manufactured in different coefficients of expansion. Fusing incompatible
glass will result in cracking.
