Hi Stephanie,

If your GB-containing recipe also contains EPK, try substituting ball
clay (keeping unity the same--use glaze calc software to match it up)
and you may well get that extra 'zing'. That is what Ron suggested I
do when I was having so much trouble getting a good chrome-tin pink
without GB and, bingo, Raspberry was born. Whether it is the finer
particle size or trace impurities of ball clay vs. EPK, I don't know.
But I have seen this substitution work well in several cases.

As you probably know we refused to use GB in any of our glazes because
of its uncertain availability and variable composition. We were also
uncomfortable using terms like 'GB-substitute' since it appears there
is no single material that is a universal substitute.

Regards,

John

The one thing that eludes me in the substitution of 3134 for GB, is
that GB has that extra ZING! The GB glazes have a bit more sizzle, 3134
ol reliable , and used often here, still kind of deadpan in it's
delivery compared to GB.

If a glaze is a party

Silica, the crowd of fine upstanding community folks who are at the
party but not sure they want to
to demean themselves by having too much fun ( by getting melted...)

In come the flux sisters, GB and 3134
to loosen them , get them laughing and moving, get them and the other
partygoers up and out on the dance floor.

3134 gets them out there all right and gets them all to dance the same
dance... kind of a line dance
yes, they are all up and out there but it isn't too exciting.

Gerstley borate on the other hand with the spirit of boogie woogie
gets the floor fluxed out in an all out jitterbug free for all.
The place is hopping, all kinds of folks turn into dancin fools.

Why does GB make that extra magic happen? boogie woogie v. line dance?

I think it must be the trace minerals. Somewhere in my mind I remember
someone, probably on this list, maybe it was Edoard?
suggesting that you add a tiny bit of wood ash in with your 3134, to
better mimic the effect of GB. the wood ash will give a dash of those
elusive spices , which are in such small quantity so as not to raise
much of a blip on the radar screen of our glaze calculations but which
will add to the taste of the stew , the dance of the glaze, and also add
to the long list of metaphors I am using at will here.

By the way ,the Alumina are some of the good folks who keep the
partygoers standing up, drive them home, after they've fluxed a bit
much.. That's what I heard, anyway....
