Hey folks, I'm quoting on a gigantic tile job where kids will paint the =
tiles w/ underglazes. I need to know which brand of UG will still have =
bright yellows, reds, oranges at ^6, and where to get the best price by =
the gallon.

Reward Velvet Underglaze does well at ^6 and also up to 7, but they don't recommend it. They also blend in a normal way, so that yellow and blue really do make green. You might get away with only four colors if you use them. Medium Blue, Deep Yellow, Red and Jet Black. I don't know who has them cheapest.

Hi Lisa,
I think the Brickyard carries Amaco Underglazes by the gallon. The number
is (800)677-3289. You even get a price break if you are ordering as a
business.
I teach 700 elementary students a week.
I use underglazes over a Majolica base glaze at cone 1 on terracotta to get
bright colors and keep costs down. The nice thing about using a Majolica
base is that when the tiles get dipped they are fully covered in glaze, so
even if the kids don't paint on the decorative colors perfectly, they still
get professional looking results. Many Amaco underglazes work nicely over
the base glaze and others work well when mixed into the base as a colorant.
I just finished a tile mural with some of my students. I had them make two
of each tile we needed. One for the mural and one to keep for
themselves...if only one turned out, then at least we had the one for the
mural.
Cheers,
John Post

I've had great success with Duncan's Cover Coat series that does go to ^6.
They require no clear coat when applied properly, can be applied in the same
manner as underglazes and are comparable in price. Their color charts have both
the results from ^04 and ^6 firings on separate pages for each of their colors.
They are reasonably priced (A 16 oz. bottle is ~ $9) and lasts when the kids
follow instructions for application. The color range is good with light, mid
and shade values for each hue. My supplier gives a 30% discount off list for
education programs. Its Clayworld, Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida.

Thanks John. I will be firing these tiles at ^6; they will be installed
outdoors. :)

Duncan's concepts all go to cone 6, and are shiny! See them at
www.nmclay.com, we offer discounts to schools. These Concepts are actually
majolica glazes. A Glaze over or under the colors will unify the surface.
