carbon monoxide for reduction firing

Hello, all. I am new to this list, and this is my first post. I feel
compelled to urge that nobody EVER try to use pure carbon monoxide,
as from a tank (assuming somebody will even sell it to you). Your CO
detector is way, way to slow to save you... this is truly insidious stuff!

A cautionary anecdote:
Some years back there was a fellow who worked for GM Research Labs
in Warren, Mich, who apparently decided to "off" his family. He had access
to tanks of CO from the labs, and undoubtedly figured he had worked out
the perfect crime: Gas them in the garage, then remove the tank and
leave the scene with the car engine running to look like accidental
poisoning.

His family was getting ready to go to church, so he slipped out to
the (closed) garage and opened the valve on the tank, then headed
for the door. He never made it.

He probably didn't have a CO detector, since the household types
weren't available back then. But it's unlikely it would have helped.
They are S-L-O-W responding. FIne for catching the gradual build-up
from a leaky furnace, but even though they respond faster to the
concentrated gas, it's not something to bet your life on.

Don't want to lose any potential new friends before I meet 'em!
