Ok. Confessions of a Messy Glazer.
For one: I no longer can "do" glaze tongs, and holding pots for pouring or
dipping is difficult. Second, I am (always have been) immensely precise
about some things, and a total slob about others. So while I LOVE glazes and
glaze calculation and glaze testing, and put on my Little Scientist Outfit
whenever I can, I work with slips on leatherhard clay, and one or two
glazes when it gets down to glazing time. I simply find it easier and better
for me.
Having said that: ALL my glazes except the slip-glazes (not slips--glazes
with high clay contents) have 3% bentonite in them and calcium chloride by
"feel" . For most of my glazes this is enough. If they are headstrong I
add a little bit of Veegum solution. I do not use other gums because, as
far as I can tell from descriptions in catalogs, CMC is organic which makes
me worry about how smelly it may get. ( A bucket of glaze lasts me a LONG
time) I sometimes add glycerin.
My pots are slip decorated on the inside, and have a glaze brushed on on the
outside, generally leather-hard on the wheel, after trimming. (Gee, such
intimate details. I feel tabloid-esque!) I find brushing onto leather hard
easiest.
When I am ready to glaze the inside (after bisque; and yes, you heard me
right, I bisque the glaze I put on raw) I make sure the bisque is damp
enough. Not sopping, but damp enough so the brush does not stick. The
glaze is used just a bit thinner than for other applications.
It is a matter of--yikes, sorry, I know that hurts--PRACTICE. You have to
develop your own "feel" for it. And IMO!!! each glaze has its own preferred
application thickness, fluidity etc.
I hope this helps. And tell me: Do you in Fly Creek have as many
black-flies this year as we? Or can we send some down? They are SO bad a
friend cannot take her dogs out for a run...
All the best
