I will be in Minneapolis the first part of July. Anyone know of any galleries or
potters that are in the area?

Thanks

our very own mel lives in the area, you have to ask him if he is going to
be around during your visit.
i am sure he can also give you a list what to see...
in minneapolis i wouldnt want to miss the institute and the northern clay
center.
the institute of art has a super collection of pottery,
and the northern clay center has a LOT of wonderful pots from dozens of
great potters. (huge exhibits and sales galleries also).

Here are some links:

Northern Clay Center is a teaching and communal studio center with a large
gallery of mostly regional potter's work, some international
www.northernclaycenter.org

Fired Up is the downscale version of Northern Clay center, also with a
gallery of members' work
www.firedupstudios.com

Dock 6 is a private groups studio with a nice showroom of their work it is
within a half a mile of FiredUp
www.dock6pottery.com

Continental Clay is also within a half mile of fired up. They have tons of
tools in their small showroom, if you don't often have a chance to select
tools in person you might check them out.

If you have a car and want to take about an hours drive from downtown
Minneapolis, you should not miss Warren Mackenzie's studio (sorry for weird
font, copied it an cannot change it).
Warren Mackenzie

Stillwater, Minnesota 55082

Hand-made utilitarian potter in stoneware and porcelain
MacKenzie's studio and showroom can be reached by heading east on route
36 from 694, which is to the north and east of St. Paul, MN, and on the
way to Stillwater, MN. Go about 2 miles and then go left (north) at the
Demontreville exit (which just allows you to get off the highway and onto
the east/west frontage road. Continue east on the frontage road about 1/2
mile to Jasmine road (a dirt road heading north). Follow Jasmine around
a big turn to the left. At the second big turn (this time to the right),
continue straight on. Follow this road, which is still Jasmine but not
very well marked, until the road ends in two driveways, one heading off
to the right and one heading straight in. The one straight in is
Mackenzie's driveway. Follow the driveway around to the right and down
the short hill to the small parking area next to his kiln room. There is
a sign indicating where the showroom is. The showroom is open during
normal business hours.

Have fun,

Hey Phil,
As Marta mentioned your first step might be to connect with Mel and see what
he is up to. Not to long ago he profiled a potter in St Paul, in Ceramics
Monthly, and he, that potter, might be available to show you his studio.
A gent at the Art Institute, Matthew Welch, wrote the book on Richard
Bresnahan and St Johns Pottery. Again, as Marta wrote, you might stop over there and
see their collection. It IS really strong in great pots (historical, mostly
though).
I try to avoid the Northern Clay Center, personally, but they do have a nice
collection of work. (Also, they're located in the heart of the city, and might
be really convenient for you.)
You might also stop in Fired Up in Northeast Minneapolis. Its a communal
studio and they too have some nice work.
For really strong work I would check out the potters in the St Croix River
valley. Folks like Bob Briscoe and the like are doing really great things, just
over the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, about 45 minutes(?) outside of mpls/st
paul.
Our own Craig Edwards is out in New London but I have no idea where that is?
:-)
If you want to see a studio full of molds and want to discuss mold making
with an expert feel free to drop me a line and I'll be happy to show you my
stuff. My studio is in Northeast minneapolis and we have several cool folks doing
cool stuff. You can see some of their work at art-a-whirl.org.
