help - my lid is stuck

Yup.. Unless you've made something earthenware, or it's incredibly thin, it
can prolly take a good heavy whack with that wooden dowel. Put it over a
table and hold it up by the knob about an inch or so off the table - low
enough that when the pot falls off the lid it won't break. ;) Now give good
solid whacks all the way around the jar while holding it up off the table by
the knob.

If that din't work, try again, only whack the lid instead of the jar.

If that din't work, try freezing it.

If that din't work, dunk it in a sinkful of water and see if any air bubbles
come up. If so, pry GENTLY by tucking a screwdriver where the air bubbles
are escaping, and twist. Not too hard, or you might break the gallery if
it's not sturdy enough.

If none of these work, congratulations; you have an EXCELLENT door stop. :)

Good luck!

I tried tapping it with a piece of heavy dowel. Maybe not enough. Any other
ideas?

I made a pot with a nicely fitting lid. The pot is slipped inside and out and glazed only on interior surfaces. I wiped the glaze away from surfaces that might touch each other but the lid is stuck nevertheless. I tried tapping it with a piece of heavy dowel. Maybe not enough. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Alexis

Hi Alexis.
Here are some methods for unsticking lids. First off, try sticking the piece
in the freezer. This will cause the clay to contract and because the lid is
smaller than the pot, it should contract first.
Along the same line, you can also try dunking the lid part of your pot in
ice water.

A trick that I think Vince once suggested is to center the piece on the
wheel and aim a propane torch at the piece, only from the rim downward. Make
sure the pot is slowly rotating so that you are not getting any hot spots
from the flame. Remember the pot can get pretty hot so be careful when you
pick it up.

Usually though, a good whack works for me. But you have to be brave and
really give it a hard knock with a stick. Sometimes I tap it, turn it, tap
it, turn it...until I have success. It is smart to lay out some padding to
catch your lid when it falls out.

Good luck!

Alexis - I got this from a student: Plunge the pot into a bucket of hot
water: you will see air bubbles rising from the areas of the lid that AREN'T
stuck. Make a note of the place(s) where it IS stuck but leave it in the
water for a while. Then remove it from the water, rest it on a foam pad,
hold the finial tightly and tap with your wooden stick in the area of the
lid that is stuck. Strike the edge of the lid and the joined pot
simultaneously. Gradually increase the force of the whacks until it's free.
Good luck,

Thanks to everyone with you suggestions for releasing my lid - I did do it
successfully using the whacking method. I am saving your other suggestions
for future experimentation.

Carpe diem,
