Well yesterday was Dean's big party downtown Burlington and even though we
never take recreation days at this time of year we made an
exception. Packed a delivery to the Frog Hollow there (Vermont has a group
of state-sponsored very la-de-da galleries that have the distinct advantage
of never going under no matter what and my primary monthly allotment comes
from them.) and off we went early in the morning. Nevermind that our
darling feline Zsa-Zsa for once in her life had to gallop all over the
rafters in some intense show of sport at 5am.
Now Frog Hollow Gallery turns out to be about 50 feet from the stage in the
intersection and directly in front of their doorway in the street is the
platform with about 15 news cameras and blow-dry guys with big padded
microphones giving their spiels with the crowd as a backdrop.
I don't mind admitting that I am more excited about Dean than I have been
about any candidate since Kennedy in 1960 when I was 15 and ran around
Berkeley trying to get people to the polls on election day. So we got the
tshirts and bumper stickers and sign for the bottom of our driveway that
all the 20 Republicans who live on our hill can contemplate, wrote a teeny
check and had a real proud good time.
Then barrelled over to Stowe through Smuggler's Notch, always super groovy,
wondering how a glacier managed to leave all its largest holdings at the
top of this narrow pass. Parking at the uphill end of the 10 mile bike
ride to and back from Stowe Village. This was the first real summer day
we've had after weeks of cold soggy weather. Toes in the water and
all....this bike path meanders back and forth over the river, really the
nicest one I know anywhere.
Raced back to meet friends for a potluck and luckily she was late too as
the Willy Nelson concert had everything backed up. Well we would have
slept thorugh it after the day we had. So we're in the kitchen with a
bunch of really nice people we've never met and there's this butter dish
they are all oohing and ahhing about. I glance over and before I have time
to think about it "I made that." has popped out. So this person says
"You're kidding."
I have been in this game a very long time and this was a first. I had, of
course, been introduced by my friends as this wizard potter from down in
southern Vermont. So a funny conversation ensued. "Can we have your
autograph?" Apparently this little group of teachers, at the home of an
art teacher who is a really excellent painter whose husband apprenticed
years ago with the great Putney woodworker Simon Watts and has this amazing
collection of handmade chairs......I scoped out the paintings and chairs
the minute I went in the door.......he had done a computer chair from great
slabs of spalded hickory with a nice 5-spoke base like in
Staples.....totally fab......was responsible for a good amount of my sales
at the local Frog.
Great day and back to work! Packing up in 2 weeks for Ann Arbor. Got to
get that postcard out.
Eleanora.....that wizard potter from down in Southern Vermont......
