It's unlikely that it's actually 'alumina'. It might be
either alumina hydrate or alumina oxide. (Many studios
stock only one or the other, and label them 'alumina'
as a shorthand, assuming that the full identity is
understood.) Either will work for kiln wash, though since
alumina oxide is generally more expensive for the amount
of alumina it provides, it might not be the best for
regular use. Alumina oxide has more alumina for its
weight than alumina hydrate (no water in the molecule),
so if that's what it is for sure, use less. Otherwise,
don't sweat it. There are a wide variety of kilnwash
recipes out there, and the proportions aren't really
critical unless you're doing salt-firing or some such.

I am out of kiln was and need to mix some more. My long standing recipe =
is 50% Alumina hydrate and 50% Flint.

Bruce,
The only difference is that 'Alumina' is calcined 'Alumina Hydrate',
that is, it doesn't have the chemically bound water molecules. Should
work just fine. To be exact, change the formula to 60% silica (flint),
40% alumina - doubt that it makes much difference.
Hope this helps,
Roger

If your not salt firing then 3 parts flint to 1 part kaolin works fine a
kiln wash. 4 part flint to 1 kaolin makes a good wad clay. A lot cheaper
to make then using alumina hydrate.

I use mixtures of ball clay, EPK and alumina hydrate - what really maters
is how well it stays on the shelf.
Try 20 Ball, 20 EPK and 60 alumina hydrate - I spray it on with one of
those one quartl pump up plant misters - splatter is better than a fine
mist.
I don't think it is so crucial for cone 6 by the way but if you find part
of your foot rims stuck to the shelf - the problem is the silica in the
wash.

I use 60% alumina hydrate and 40% epk (by volume). It is critically
important for glass to thoroughly clean each shelf and replace with a new
coat of kiln wash. I use either 3 thin brushed coats, or I mix the kiln
wash 50-50 and apply it as a thick slip with my fingers to get texture in
the glass.
