Regarding containers for everything: I'm a beginner too, and I found a tip in
"Great Ideas For Potters", a compendium of reader's suggestions from
Cermamics Monthly. It suggested that school cafeterias got lots of
supplies in big plastic containers. Well, it turns out that our local
schools don't... but it got me thinking. Yep, the local supermarket
"deli" departments get lots of big containers with snap-on lids,
and they were glad to save them for me. I got plenty in the 1 gallon
range that hold 5-10 pounds of powdered glaze ingedients.
Also got some heavy 2-3 gallon sizes for future use. Those big
ones had frosting in them for the bakery department, the others had
salsa and other things. Got different styles from 2 different markets.
I suspect that restaurants would be another good source.
I imagine it was a bit of a nuisance for these people to put these things
aside for me, and they washed them out a little so as not to smell
up the area. So I am planning to make them a pot for their counter top, when
I get good enough so as not to be ashamed of it.
Might even be a subtle way to advertise, once you are at that stage!

I use the clear plastic containers that Indian River Orange and
Greatfruit Juice comes in, for glazes mixed in 1000 gram batches. Just
the right size.
For dry chemicals in quantities smaller than a bag, I use my cat's dry
food containers. I use a purina cat food and the canisters are widemouth
with a flip lid, and a builtin handle. Will hold about 10 lbs, depending
on what chemical.
