Workshop Topic and Focus

Functional Stoneware and Single-Firing: Aesthetics, Form and Technical
Aspects

Steven's eye for form is amazing. His ability to see form and to create work
that is both functional and sculptural at the same time is exceptional. Have
you ever asked - 'What makes a pot functional?' and 'How can pottery
transcend mere function, while still honoring its' intended use?'. This
workshop will pursue both questions.

Overview

Steven will spend two days demonstrating his techniques of working with clay
that include: throwing, altering, slip trailing, trimming, assembling and
glazing. Throughout these demonstrations, Steven will discuss specific
aesthetic and design issues in addition to philosophical and business
practices. He will also discuss technical aspects of clay and firing with
particular emphasis upon the single-firing process that he has used
throughout his career of 30+ years. In addition to the 'making' phases,
Steven will demonstrate his glazing process. The manner of teaching will be
extremely interactive. Steven will discuss processes and answer questions
throughout the workshop. This workshop will be equally inspirational and
educational to sculptors, and functional potters regardless of techniques
used.
