Ingleby Gallery (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK)
Ceramic artists:
... Rupert Spira (Shropshire, England, UK) (Wheel thrown vessels,=20
sometimes inscribed with poems.) Intended as sculpture, and priced=20
accordingly, Spira's vessels are in the Coper-Rie tradition. In the=20
blurb, he is praised for his wonderful glazes, but the Ingleby Gallery=20
images don't seem to do the pieces justice. Spira formerly owned a=20
production pottery and tile studio in Hampshire, England, where a number=20
of other British potters and tile makers apprenticeda. The pottery,=20
which now concentrates on tile making, is still in operation under new=20
ownership: . There are excellent=20
examples of the company's rich tile glazes on the site; possibly ones=20
developed by Spira during his time there.
... Andy Goldsworthy (Dumfriesshire, Scotland, UK) "Clay Wall"=20
installation (for sale, price unstated)
"Wall" image is here:=20
g>.=20
Again, the image is too small, and too diminished for more than a bare=20
glimpse of the artist's work.
... Hylton Nel (Born in Zambia, spent time in Antwerp and England, now=20
in South Africa) (Tin glazed pottery);
... Julian Stair (London, England, UK) (Porcelain and stoneware=20
pottery; interesting forms)

years. She is now the senior designer amongst a half a dozen or more
staff designers. There is a Windows Media video series of the factory
production methods.

Mark Dally (MWD Squiggle Pottery) (Stone, Staffordshire, UK)

Designer-Maker Mark Dally, M.A.(!) studied at Staffordshire University,=20
Stoke on Trent where he specialised in Ceramics and Surface Pattern. He=20
makes a line of "Black&WhiteWare" functional pieces, "a bold,=20
contemporary take on traditional Staffordshire slipware", and various=20
whimsical "modern" clocks. He says about his clocks: "In my work I try=20
to transform the everyday into the surprising and witty - yet still=20
faintly familiar. Starting with shapes taken from plastic childrens'=20
toys or household gadgets, and by adapting some industrial ceramic=20
techniques to my studio ceramic approach, I rearrange and re-assemble=20
elements from mass production to make my handmade clockwork characters."

More potters from the UK

Steve Marr and Andrew Pollard (The Potters Barn) (Cheshire, UK)

Marr and Pollard are pottery partners who work in raku and stoneware.=20
They also teach children and adults, including homeschoolers, in their=20
studio, and they provide an online selection of books to order from=20
Amazon.com. They market the "Discus" pottery wheel, which is powered=20
with what is referred to as a "pancake" motor. Most versions are=20
table-top wheels, but there is one floor model for the professional=20
thrower, that is capable of throwing 85 pounds of clay.

Jeremy James Ceramics (Derbyshire, England, UK)

James does compelling sculptures in stoneware, mainly of animal=20
subjects. I am trying to understand what emotion these pieces invoke in=20
me. Perhaps irony? Whatever, the viewer must draw on internal cues to=20
interpret the pieces (or not). Not by the farthest stretch of the=20
imagination "cute" or "whimsical", nor are they merely anatomically=20
accurate representations of the animals they portray (though they are=20
that), these sculptures come across as somehow ever so slightly unsettlin=
g.
